Your load weight, lift height, floor conditions, run time, charging access, and turning space all affect the decision.

Common Capacity Ranges

Choose the Right Configuration for the Space
A forklift's dimensions can affect productivity just as much as its lifting ability. Before renting or buying, measure aisle widths, doorway openings, trailer access, ceiling clearance, rack height, and turning areas. Check for low pipes, sprinkler lines, dock doors, and overhead obstructions.
Three-wheel electric forklifts have a tight turning radius and can be a good fit for warehouse aisles and congested storage areas. Four-wheel electric models generally offer a more planted feel and may suit heavier loads or frequent travel over uneven concrete. Stand-up reach trucks are designed for racking applications and narrow aisles, but they are not a substitute for a general outdoor forklift.
Mast selection matters, too. A two-stage mast works well when lift height is modest. A three-stage mast provides more lift height while keeping the collapsed mast lower, which can help when passing through doors or working beneath low clearances. If you are unloading from trailers, make sure the mast and overhead guard will clear the opening.
Battery Type Determines Your Work Rhythm
The battery is the working heart of an electric forklift. Lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries differ in cost, charging habits, and operating advantages.
Lead-acid batteries have a long track record and are common in fleet applications. They typically need a dedicated charging area, ventilation, watering, and routine maintenance. They are often charged after a shift and may need battery changes for multi-shift use. For a consistent, single-shift operation with available charging space, lead-acid can be a sensible option.
Lithium-ion batteries generally charge faster, require less routine battery maintenance, and can support opportunity charging during breaks or between tasks. They can be a strong fit for busy operations that need flexible run time, though the upfront cost can be higher. The best choice depends on shift length, charger access, budget, and whether the forklift must run continuously.
Do not assume a standard wall outlet will cover your needs. Chargers have electrical requirements, and you should plan the charging location for safety and access. Keep the area clear, train employees on the charging procedure, and do not let charging cords become a trip hazard in an active warehouse.
Tires and Floors Still Matter
Electric does not always mean indoor-only. Many electric forklifts can operate outside on smooth, dry pavement, particularly when equipped with pneumatic tires. However, they are not rough-terrain forklifts. Loose gravel, deep potholes, mud, steep grades, and soft ground can reduce traction and create stability problems.
Cushion tires are a common choice for smooth warehouse floors and paved surfaces. They provide a compact profile and work well where floor conditions are controlled. Pneumatic tires offer more cushioning and can handle imperfect pavement better, but the truck may be larger and need more aisle space.
Look at the route, not just the pickup point. A forklift may move from a warehouse floor to a loading dock, across a parking area, and into a trailer. The least favorable section of that route often determines which tire type and forklift configuration will work safely.
Renting or Buying Electric Forklifts
Renting makes sense when the need is temporary, seasonal, or tied to a specific project. It can also help when your permanent forklift is down for service, inventory volumes spike, or you need a different capacity for a short period. A rental lets you put the right class of machine on the job without committing to ownership before you understand how it performs in your facility.
Buying can be the better long-term move when you use a forklift regularly, and your operating conditions are stable. Ownership gives you consistent access to a familiar machine, but you also take on maintenance planning, battery care, inspections, and eventual replacement costs. Confirm delivery options, charger availability, battery condition, fork length, attachments, maintenance responsibility, and the operator requirements for your site. A quick conversation before delivery can prevent a lost day due to an undersized truck, the wrong tires, or a charger that doesn't match your power supply.
Safe Operation Is Part of the Equipment Choice
Electric forklifts are quiet, which is useful indoors but can make pedestrian awareness more important. Operators should use horns at intersections, follow site traffic patterns, travel with loads low, and watch for people entering aisles or loading zones. Inspect the forklift before each shift for forks, chains, tires, steering, brakes, hydraulics, lights, alarms, and battery connections.
Only trained, authorized operators should run the equipment. Capacity labels, seat belts, load backrests, and overhead guards are not optional details.
